Academic Support

The Resource Specialist Program (RSP) is a program to help children who qualify for special education services. The program is designed to give support to children with learning disabilities and give them strategies to help them be successful in their education. The RSP program offers small group instruction to meet the needs of each child’s individual education plan (IEP). Children are given instruction in the least restrictive environment.

Venetia Valley K-8 has a very strong RSP program, which follows the classroom curriculum and grade level expectations. The RSP teacher meets and plans with classroom teachers to ensure that the children in RSP are being taught the skills required at their grade level. There is constant communication between the classroom teacher, RSP teacher, and the parents to ensure learning. If a child is having problems at school, whether in the general education classroom, on the playground, or in the RSP class, teachers and parents work together so that the problem is quickly identified and resolved in order for the child to achieve maximum social, emotional, and academic success.

Students in RSP are encouraged to work their hardest to reach and perform at their potential. Many students receiving RSP support during their elementary school years go onto middle school and are able to be mainstreamed or continue with support, as needed. The goal of RSP and of the Special Education program are to provide learning support needed so that children can achieve grade level standards and overcome their disabilities so that they can perform in future years without those services.

Academic Support Grading Policy

Students will be graded on the following: supply and binder quizzes, any handouts & assignments, independent reading (SSR), participation, and bringing all materials to class every day.

Sustained Silent Reading (SSR)

Students should have an independent reading book at all times. On Monday-Friday during the Academic Support class, students are involved in Sustained Silent Reading (SSR). Bringing and using at least one book to read daily to Academic Support class is part of each student’s grade.

School Supplies

Having the necessary school supplies is key to a student’s success. If a student needs to replace any of their supplies (binder, dividers, lined paper, pencils, etc.), they should let their Academic Support/Advisory teacher know what they need. Having and bringing to class all supplies, including their planner, reading book and assignments from other classes is part of each student’s grade.

Parent Portal

Venetia Valley believes it takes a partnership involving the student, the parent(s)/guardians and educators to achieve the best possible learning environment. We encourage all parents/guardians to be involved in their student’s education. Parents/guardians can access their student’s grades through the School Loop Parent Portal. All assignments and current grades can be viewed 24/7 at your convenience. If you need assistance setting up your account, please call (415) 492-3150 or visit our front office and ask for assistance, and we will be happy to assist you.
